                           BROTHERHOOD 兄弟

Taegukgi is a war movie which speaks of brotherhood in a light you would've never imagined... Of the blood that were spilled in the war holds valuable lessons in life we could learn from... the idea of brotherhood goes beyond what chao ah bengs profess to uphold when their brudders are kenna 'hood' by other street hoodlums... No, it does not involve chasing rival gangs with parang knives or machetes either... Brotherhood here is defined by the ultimate act of selflessness to ensure your brother lives to see the sun rise another day while more often than not, ending your life...

I'm not telling you guys to lay down your lives for your blood brother or 'brudders' this very minute but wouldn't it be better to give than to take in the little things we do everyday? I don't know about you guys, but nothing makes my day more than to see the people around me happy, even if it inconveniences me greatly... For that, i've always been an easy going guy who goes along with the majority, not that i don't have an opinion of my own, but i'd rather forsake my own interests to go with the rest... So, the next time your brother asks to use this computer of yours while you're busy playing gunbound... let him... unless of cause you have a sister like mine... don't need to ask any questions, slap her first then talk... hahaha... joking lah...

Anyway, i feel like giving more endorsement to the movie... i don't think i have done enough justice to its realistic protrayal of the Korean War fought between the same race of people backed by 2 very different ideologies. The movie explores brotherhood on various fronts… that of the blood brothers, the next of soldiers-in-arms on a battlefield, and lastly between that of your fellow countrymen… If there is anything that we already know, war only brings pain and grief to people. The Korean War is different from the World Wars because in the latter, it was justified in order to liberate the oppressed from the tyrants. But the Korean War was nothing of that sort… the conflict arise because of ideological differences between their OWN people… Imagine going to war with Malaysia where many of us still maintain regular ties with relatives over there, would you kill just because your country tells you to? This is the dilemma Koreans are facing even up till today… absurd ain’t it?

The movie’s final scene made me shed a tear or two… this brother grieving over the remains of his elder brother and chiding him for not fulfilling his promise to make it back home alive… my utmost respect to people like him… they died so that others may live… How many people can actually do that? I dare say I would gladly do it for the people close to me in my life… self sacrifice in times of war is not hard a decision for me to make, the only question is: What are you dying for?
